10th Street

IMG_2157I have many happy memories growing up in South Philly. The best part was that I was able to see most of my family members on a daily basis. I thought this was the way everyone lived. Always surrounded by family, growing up with my cousins, never feeling alone. Our 3 bedroom row house was nothing fancy to to me it was beautiful, even though we had furniture covered in plastic.

Pretty funny now that I think about it and I would bet my bottom dollar there are still couches (that’s what we called them) covered the same way.

Our backyard was just a slab of concrete with 2 small gardens against the cinder block wall. But in that garden was the most beautiful peach tree around. I still don’t understand how that tree grew there but it did. And the peaches were huge and sweet.
Dinner was at our house a few nights a week but mostly we were at “grandmom’s”. Between Bepa and Grandmom we were never hungry. The same when Brian grew up there. We always ate together and I will always be grateful to our family for taking care of him while I worked. Great memories with a great family.

I agree, cuz. I thought everyone grew up surrounded by family. It’s something that I can only appreciate as an adult. That’s why I looked for a small town to live in while my kids grew up. But the unique childhood we had could never be duplicated.

Whatever happened to the peach tree? Now that I read this, I remember (vaguely) you telling me about it when I was little…but it must have been gone by the time I came into the picture.
